edbl - Producer

Brixton based R&B and Hip Hop producer edbl is on the come up. Fresh off the release of his latest mixtape ‘Boys & Girls’, we crashed an impromptu recording session with rap artist Sami Switch.

As a producer, what is your musical style?

Definitely a blend of different things. I’m a guitarist first and foremost but also hip hop drums for sure, and lots of other instrumentation. Brass and keys. Overall I’d say it’s loosely R&B and Soul.

What did you grow up listening to?

I was a proper indie boy. Foals, Bombay Bicycle Club, Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats, even Jack Penate! I had a little bit of motown influence from my Mum but I was opened up to R&B and Soul when I went to uni and met people with the same passion for music but from different backgrounds. The two that really stuck with me were D’Angelo and A Tribe Called Quest.

What are your career highlights to date?

Touring with Ady Suleiman. We became mates at uni and I ended up touring as his guitarist. We’ve been to South Korea, Jamaica and done a full European tour. It’s all a bit of a blur, but a fantastic blur!

Dream collabs?

It’s an exciting time for the UK R&B and Hip Hop scene. Mahalia, Sinead Harnett and James Vickery I would love to collaborate with. And also Mac Ayers from the US.

How important has music been to you this year?

To be honest lockdown wasn’t too bad for me as it coincided with the exact time I needed to be working on my mixtape. It cleared my schedule and allowed me time to work on my own project. It also changed my way of working a bit so now I put aside specific time to work exclusively on my own stuff, which I never really did before.

What should we be looking out for from edbl?

My new mixtape ‘Boys + Girls’ just came out! Every song has a unique feature so whilst it is an edbl project it’s also these fantastic other people too!

And finally… What does Wonderland look like to you?

One part of me goes to a stereo-typical tropical island, just chilling out with the sun and the feel of the sea breeze. But another part of me thinks just being on the sofa with my mrs and just switching off from everything, just because that’s more accessible and happens more often!
